Names of God

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” — Proverbs 18:10

In the ancient Near East, a name was not merely a label but a revelation of character. Each name God uses for Himself unveils an aspect of His nature, His relationship with His people, or His redemptive purposes.

  • YHWH — The covenant name of God, “I AM WHO I AM”
  • Elohim — God as Creator and sovereign ruler
  • El Shaddai — God Almighty, the all-sufficient one
  • Adonai — Lord and Master, sovereign over all
  • El Elyon — God Most High, supreme above all powers
  • YHWH Yireh — The LORD will provide, the God who sees and supplies

When God reveals a name, He is inviting His people into deeper knowledge of who He is. To call upon the name of the LORD is to call upon His very person and character (Romans 10:13).
